notes on practice
writings on emerging and established artistic practices from Africa and the diaspora.
hi, welcome to notes on practice a bi-monthly (thankful for the ambiguity of this word) newsletter that highlights and offers personal musings on the work of early to late-career artists from the African continent and its adjacents.
for a while now, i have attempted (with varying degrees of success) to juggle my work as an artist, curator and art writer, trying to find new modes of communication and mediation between my practice(s) and the works of artists that excite me. i started writing about art as a way to eloquently convey ideas from my artistic work in writing. however, i found it difficult to write more than a paragraph on my works and have since moved on to writing about other artists in the form of reviews, essays and exhibition statements.
this newsletter serves as a way to continue (read ‘reinvent’) this work outside of word-length restrictions and gallery-speak. the writings in notes on practice first function as a careful reading of diverse artistic languages as well as an experiment with writing. each edition delicately mines new meanings and forms embedded within the image and text. imagine a wave rolling in on itself as it approaches the shore, bringing new things with each unfurling.
to kick things off, i’ll be posting a series of essays titled memos on difference which i produced during my residency at the Cité Internationale des Arts, Paris. the project takes as a point of departure Glissant’s concept of Relation and uprooting in examining the multiplicity of diasporic identities in the works of young migrant/itinerant artists.
the first post will be up on June 1 and all posts will be free to access. i hope you’ll come with me on this journey and share this newsletter with those who’ll appreciate it within your network.
